The Cliffs

Dangling my feet

over a sea of navy.

Gripping onto sanity

like the hands that grip this earth.

I’m on a patch of green,

a color to be calming,

and yet these daydreams

are nightmares in hiding.

I’m trying.

I’m trying to separate

the grief and despair

from the gratitude

of the salty air.

Does this shatter the image

that I’m clinging to?

Where it’s all figured out

and I’m reaping the rewards.

Every wave that crashes

against the rocks below

is just an audible reminder

that I am breaking also.

So here I sit,

in a place I deemed my peace.

Whispering my surrender

to the life I did not seek.

If I seem vacant,

know my mind is at the cliffs.

I’m rearranging thoughts

and displacing any rifts.

I’ll save you a spot,

if you’re not afraid of heights.

It’s a long drop to the bottom,

but here,

it’s all alright.

Take Me With the Tide

I can feel the weight

crashing down on me.

It’s coming in fast and heavy,

like a storm amongst the sea.

I don’t think my boat will hold…

It’s already got some holes.

HELP.

I’m screaming out loud.

HELP.

I’m seeing water now.

HELP.

Is anyone out there?

Is anyone out there?

Is anything out there?

help.

I can feel the icy blue

creeping on my toes,

like it already knows,

I’m going with the undertow.

I can hear the sound of silence

even over the crushing of the wood.

I can see a long lost part of me

that I know no one else even could.

It’s an abyss.

It’s pulling.

It’s mighty and I’m fearful,

and all I can think to do

is fall to my knees,

join my hands and

scream

PLEASE.

HELP.

I’m praying out loud.

HELP.

I’m seeing water now.

HELP.

Is anyone out there?

Is anyone out there?

Is anything out there?

help.

I’m clinging on to a sense of false hope.

Gripping a piece of drift wood

with every ounce of strength I’ve got.

Thinking this will save me;

it will surely carry me to shore.

Never mind the stormy darkness.

Never mind the sharks around my feet.

I’m bleeding out,

and they’re wanting me.

I don’t see any land in sight,

Maybe I just let them feed.

HELP.

I’m screaming out loud.

HELP.

I’m seeing water now.

HELP.

Is anyone out there?

Is anyone out there?

Is anything out there?

help.

Maybe now’s the time to daydream

about the sunshine I took for granted.

All the sand beneath my toes,

all the grit; all that substance.

The smell of salty air,

and the warmth that hugged me close.

I was never alone.

At least, I couldn’t feel it.

Here I am.

Feeling everything I’ve suppressed.

Even with the stars as a shining guide above,

I’m sinking in my loneliness.

HELP.

I’m letting go.

HELP.

Show me a sign.

Remind me of my why.

HELP.

I’m begging now.

Salt.

I can taste it.

It’s bringing me back.

I close my eyes.

I pray.

Lord, take me all the way.

Instead of under, He held me up.

I no longer hear the thunder,

the storm is wrapping up.

He was there.

When no souls were present,

His was effervescent.

I trust a shore is near.

I trust the waves will clear.

Landline

How do you explain to someone that they’re your life line?

A physical cord, as if it were a landline.

I feel as if I don’t care about any other calls I may receive.

They can listen to a busy tone.

Sorry, not sorry, but I’m unavailable.

Codependency? I don’t believe so.

I talk to others all the time, mainly in person.

But his calls? Those intimate late night talks?

Those are the ones that fuel every bit of my broken soul.

It’s in the small details.

The intricate yellow spiral spanning a few feet long.

Nothing grand, nothing glamorous, but it’s sturdy, safe, and reliable.

Sturdy, safe, and reliable.

How sad that these were qualities in past relationships I had never seen, never heard of; simply never knew they existed.

This landline feels like the newest cellphone on the market to me.

It’s a discovery I wouldn’t sell for any amount in the world.

They can have their shiny toys,

ones they pay extra for, monthly,

just to repeatedly break and replace.

That’s their version of reliable.

A backup plan they continuously invest in.

I don’t pay extra.

I don’t think of the newest model, an “upgrade.”

I don’t purposefully destroy.

What I have…

What I have is timeless.

What I have isn’t as easy or convenient,

but damn, does it always work.

What I have is forever.

Each spiral pulls a little further,

expanding itself to reach whichever new rooms I may venture into.

What I have is perfection.

What I have is real.

The laying on your bed and

kicking your feet in the air,

with your fuzzy pajamas on,

venting about the mundane,

and gossiping about all things spicy and juicy.

It’s nostalgic, yet fresh.

It’s peace, yet chaotic.

It may require a little extra maintenance, but we willingly do the work.

We don’t pawn it off.

We don’t hang up the call.

This is what I hold the closest to my chest.

This phone hears every beat of my heart,

and I deliberately pause to pay attention…

to hear the percussion of love on the other end.

I’m in love.

Deep, burning, indescribable love.

Lucky me,

I get to hear that baritone voice on the other end for the rest of my life.

Walk Away

Pregnancy insomnia? Found a solution.

Just like the last poem, the first four lines came to me in a soft ballad-like tune. I think my baby is bringing out the musical side in me lately! Unlike the last poem, however, I sang every word while I wrote this one. It is intended to be a song, and a comforting one at that. I hope you enjoy this beautiful, and incredibly relatable, piece.

Cheers!

Baby, walk away with me.

It’ll be the last thing we do together.

Baby, walk away with me.

Promise it’ll all get better.

___

I’m just tired of the fights,

all the sleepless nights,

questioning who’s right,

and those painful cries.

___

Once, you were my best friend.

Thought I’d be your partner ’till the end.

Our love was something others couldn’t comprehend.

And when we fell, I rose to defend.

___

Baby, walk away with me.

It’ll be the last thing we do together.

Baby, walk away with me.

Promise we’ll both be better.

___

I’m just tired of the lies,

and all the empty whys,

questioning our tries,

and losing what was mine.

___

Once, we shared the best laughs.

We could be ourselves; no masks.

Our love was so strong, thought for sure that it would last.

And when I sank, you were my life raft.

___

Baby, walk away with me.

It’ll be the last thing we do together.

Baby, walk away with me.

Promise you’ll find another.

___

Our time has come for goodbye.

I’m scared if we wait any longer,

we’ll leave hating one another.

Let’s walk away out of love.

Let’s walk away with our trust.

Let’s walk away… it’s a must.

___

Baby, walk away with me.

Let me give you one last kiss before I leave.

Baby, walk away with me.

We’ll be better for this…

For this…

I believe.
